PHP schedule: what a day looks like
A partial hospitalization day runs five to seven hours of structured clinical programming, five days a week, so you get intensive support while still sleeping at home.
Why the structure of PHP matters
One of the most common things people say after finishing PHP is that the structure itself was part of the healing. When substance use has organized your day for months or years, having a healthy rhythm that fills the same hours becomes a form of treatment.
The partial care program at Archangel Centers in Tinton Falls, NJ is designed around that principle. Every block of the day has a purpose, and every purpose is connected to your recovery.
A typical PHP day, from arrival to departure
While schedules vary slightly by facility, the following reflects the general shape of a PHP day at a clinically strong program. Archangel Centers will share its specific schedule during your admissions call.
Morning check-in
The day typically begins with a brief group check-in where clients share how they are feeling and set an intention for the day. It is low-pressure but purposeful. It helps the clinical team spot anything that needs attention and gives clients a moment to transition from home mode to treatment mode.
Psychoeducation group
A structured teaching session covering topics like how addiction affects the brain, what cravings are and how they work, cognitive patterns that drive substance use, and the science behind evidence-based treatments. The tone is educational, not lecture-style. Questions are welcomed.
Process group
A facilitated group therapy session where clients share, listen, and offer feedback in a supported environment. This is often described as one of the most valuable parts of the day. Hearing others articulate experiences you have had but could not name is unexpectedly powerful.
Individual therapy
A one-on-one session with your primary therapist, several times per week. This is where the personal work happens: reviewing goals, processing trauma, addressing underlying conditions, and adjusting the treatment plan as you progress.
Skills training
Practical sessions in CBT, DBT, or mindfulness that give you concrete tools for managing anxiety, cravings, difficult relationships, and emotional dysregulation. The skills you learn here are the ones you carry into life after treatment.
Afternoon wind-down
The day closes with a wrap-up group or brief reflection. The clinical team does a final check-in, addresses any concerns about the evening ahead, and connects clients to any after-hours resources they may need. You leave with a plan for the rest of your day.
What happens between sessions
PHP is intensive, but it is not relentless. There are short breaks between groups, time to eat, and moments for informal conversation with staff and peers. These unstructured moments are part of the program too. Learning to exist in a space without substances, without needing to fill every moment, is a skill.
In the evenings and on weekends, you return to your home environment. This is where the tools you are learning get tested. Your clinical team anticipates this and builds coping strategies specifically around the situations you are likely to face between sessions.
How long does PHP last?
Most clients attend PHP for two to four weeks. The length depends on your starting point, how quickly you stabilize, and what the clinical team recommends. PHP is not a fixed-length program. It is a level of care you stay in as long as it is the right fit, then step down from when you are ready.
The step down is typically to intensive outpatient, three to four sessions per week instead of five, and then to weekly outpatient support. This graduated reduction keeps you supported while returning more of the day to your life outside treatment.
Common questions
PHP schedule, answered
What time does PHP start each day?
Most partial care programs start between 8 and 9 in the morning and run through early to mid-afternoon. Your admissions counselor will give you the specific schedule for Archangel Centers before your first day.
Can I work while in PHP?
Some clients work part-time in the evenings or on weekends while attending PHP. Full-time work during PHP is rarely feasible given the time commitment, but many employers offer FMLA leave that covers treatment attendance.
What is the difference between a PHP day and a regular therapy appointment?
A regular outpatient therapy appointment is typically 45 to 60 minutes once a week. A PHP day is five to seven hours of structured clinical programming including multiple groups, individual therapy, psychiatric check-ins, and skills training.
