Understanding alcohol use disorder

What alcohol addiction looks like

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a chronic medical condition, not a moral failure. It develops gradually, often starting with social or stress-related drinking that grows into physical dependence and compulsive use. By the time most people recognize they have a problem, alcohol has already reshaped how their brain processes reward, stress, and decision-making.

In New Jersey, alcohol remains the most commonly treated substance use disorder. It affects people of every age, background, and profession. The shame and secrecy that often surround alcohol problems can delay treatment for years, which is why Archangel Centers approaches every client with complete confidentiality and zero judgment.

If you or someone you love is drinking in a way that feels out of control, treatment works. Recovery is possible, and it starts with one honest conversation.

Warning signs

Signs and symptoms of alcohol use disorder

Drinking more than intended

Regularly consuming larger amounts or drinking for longer periods than planned.

Failed attempts to cut back

Trying more than once to reduce or stop drinking without lasting success.

Strong cravings

Intense urges or compulsive thoughts about alcohol that are hard to ignore.

Neglecting responsibilities

Alcohol interfering with work, school, parenting, or relationships.

Drinking despite consequences

Continuing to drink even after it has caused health, legal, or social problems.

Withdrawal symptoms

Feeling shaky, sweaty, anxious, or sick when you stop or significantly reduce drinking.

Recognizing these signs in yourself or a loved one is the first step. You do not need to check every box to deserve help. If alcohol is causing problems in your life, our team is ready to listen.

Medical and clinical note

Is detox needed before alcohol treatment?

Alcohol withdrawal can produce serious medical complications, including seizures and a condition called delirium tremens (DTs). For clients with heavy, daily drinking patterns, medically supervised detox is often necessary before entering PHP or IOP at our Tinton Falls center. We coordinate detox placement with trusted medical partners so the transition is safe and uninterrupted.

If you are unsure whether detox is the right first step, our admissions team will review your drinking history during a free, confidential assessment and give you a clear recommendation.

How we treat it

Our approach to alcohol addiction treatment

At Archangel Centers, alcohol addiction treatment is delivered at the level of care that matches where you are right now. Clients who need daily structure begin in our Partial Care (PHP) program, which runs about six hours per day, five days a week. As you build stability and coping skills, you step down to Intensive Outpatient (IOP), then to standard outpatient or virtual sessions for continued support.

Clinical treatment includes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to identify and reframe thought patterns that fuel drinking, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) for emotion regulation and distress tolerance, individual therapy with a dedicated primary counselor, group process and psychoeducation, and psychiatric evaluation for co-occurring conditions such as anxiety or depression.

If you also struggle with anxiety, depression, trauma, or another mental health condition alongside alcohol use, our team provides integrated dual diagnosis treatment so both conditions are addressed together, not in isolation.

Life after treatment

What recovery from alcohol addiction looks like

Recovery from alcohol use disorder is a process, not a single event. Most clients experience meaningful improvements in sleep, physical health, relationships, and mental clarity within the first weeks of treatment. Over time, the coping skills and community built in PHP and IOP become the foundation for a life that no longer revolves around drinking.

We do not promise guaranteed outcomes, because recovery depends on many individual factors. What we do promise is honest, rigorous clinical care and a team that stays invested in your progress long after you leave our center. Alumni support and step-down planning ensure you have a clear path forward before you complete any level of care.
